Eating Disorders and Oral Health: an eclipse of the mind and oral systemic health

Eating disorders are mental health disorders–they effect the way a person thinks about themselves and this is translated into behaviors non conducive to health and wellness. As dental hygienists we play a collaborative role, for example by: facilitating clients who have an eating disorder to access care and recovery from the illness; lessening the impact of the disorder on the oral environment; and providing healthy messages and resources for our clients. Know your role, engage in it by taking pro-active action, and be a health professional your clients can count on.
