MDHA Brush for the Cure

Posted by on Aug 16, 2016 in community, PAR, volunteer | 0 comments

On Sunday, October 2nd, 2016 the Manitoba Dental Hygienists Association will once again be joining tens of thousands of Canadians to participate in the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure.

In accordance with the new policy developped by the MDHA Board of Directors, participation on MDHA Team Brush for the Cure is open only to current MDHA members and their non-dental hygienist family members and friends.  Certificates for a PAR will be sent only to MDHA members who participate on run day, in addition a list of MDHA member participants will be forwarded to the CDHM who will determine eligibility for a PAR.

Lets see if Team MDHA Brush for the Cure can raise more money than we did last year!  Make a post on Facebook with the link to your Personal Run for the Cure page, Tweet about it, send out emails, encourage the people you work with to support you, be creative and lets see the donations come pouring in!

Lets raise a lot of money, have a lot of fun, and do what we can to help beat this awful disease!

Sunday, October 5th, 2014

Join the MDHA in the 2014 Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure. We’re striving to raise as many funds as possible, and your energy and enthusiasm could help us make a huge impact. By joining the MDHA team and fundraising for the CIBC Run for the Cure, you will be helping to create a future without breast cancer. The money we raise will help to fund Canadian researchers exploring the diagnosis, treatment, recovery, and prevention of breast cancer.

The CIBC Run for the Cure is Canada’s largest single-day, volunteer-led event dedicated to raising funds for breast cancer research, education, and health promotion initiatives.

The team captain this year is Heather Sirkovsky.  Email her at hsk58 (at) for more information.

Great Mission Opportunity

Posted by on Jul 25, 2014 in community, outreach | 0 comments

Canadians Helping Kids in Vietnam (CHKV) is a Winnipeg-based charity working since 1995 to improve the lives of children in Vietnam. We basically build schools, get Canadians to sponsor destitute families monthly, run our Biking on a Child’s Future campaigns to purchase bicycles to enable students to get to and from school, and we send dental and medical teams on two week missions.
We are hoping to send a dental team to Vietnam from March 1 – 15, 2015 and another team the following year. We have had dental missions in 2010 and 2012 where hundreds of low income families saw their children receive free primary care including examinations, cleanings, fillings, and extractions. The first and last weekends are used for travel to and from Vietnam but the middle weekend is usually a 4 day break at a resort.
For our next mission we are hoping to send a team of 2-3 dentists, 2-3 hygienists and possibly assistants and general volunteers for record-keeping and activities for the children while they are waiting.  The two week clinics have generally occurred in hospitals but we are looking at other sites in various communities throughout Vietnam.
An estimate of the airfare, ground transportation, hotels and some after service activities is calculated and participants contribute that as a donation to CHKV. In return, all travel arrangements are made by CHKV and a tax receipt is provided for participants following the mission. It is also of interest to some to be able to request pre or post mission personal travel arrangements and that we are prepared to do as well.
If you are interested in receiving more information for this amazing experience, please call Tam Nguyen at 204-775 – 1160 who will lead the 2015 dental mission.

Dear Colleagues

The holiday season is upon us and MDHA is preparing  hampers for two families in need through the Christmas Cheer Board.  If you would like to help  out, please bring non-perishable food items to the main reception area at our office at 200E – 1215 Henderson Hwy (2nd floor) from November 26 to December 13th, Monday – Friday, 9 AM – 4 PM.  If you would like to buy a toy for one of the 8 children please contact Heather at or (204) 802-7998 for more information about the children’s gender and ages.

Additionally, we are updating our volunteer email list. Please send an email to Heather at if you are interested in receiving emails about community volunteer opportunities (which count as PAR requirements for the CDHM CCP program) or  if you would like to have your name added to the volunteer list (you are not committing yourself to anything by having your name on the list).  Also, if you think that your name is on the list but you have not been receiving the volunteer opportunity request emails please contact me at the above email address to let me know.  These volunteer opportunities are lots of fun and are a great way to promote our profession and good oral hygiene!

Wishing you all a wonderful holiday season and thank you as you generously share with others in our community who are less fortunate than we are!
Yours truly,

Heather Sirkovsky, RDH
