Local Anesthesia - Continuing Education Program

Continuing Education Program
Faculty of Dentistry, School of Dental Hygiene
University of Manitoba

November 6-8, 2009

This course will prepare the dental hygienist to become competent in the administration of both block and infiltration local anesthesia. Emphasis is placed on the mechanisms of pain and a thorough understanding of the pharmacology of dental drugs and their interaction with the client’s current conditions and medications. The course consists of a minimum of 6 weeks of self-study prior to the 3-day workshop. Examination of didactic material will occur on the first day of the workshop following a review of didactic materials. The second and third days of the workshop will consist of the clinical administration of anesthesia on each other. This course is recognized by the following provincial licensing authorities: BC, AB, SK, MB

Duration: Minimum 6 weeks self-study
24 hours course attendance (Friday, Saturday, Sunday)

Participants must be graduates of an accredited Dental Hygiene Program and hold current licensure in their province or state of residence. Participants must also hold a current certification in CPR (Basic Rescuer Level) and hold current malpractice insurance.

Proof of all the above credentials must accompany the
registration form (PDF, 2 pages, 244 KB).

Join us for a highly progressive, unique ultrasonics workshop that will take you to the next level in patient care and help you meet the demands of today’s non-surgical periodontal therapy.

This interactive session will give participants the opportunity to maximize their current ultrasonic knowledge and skills and achieve an advanced level of clinical confidence using ultrasonic instrumentation. The facilitator will go beyond the traditional lecture format to present scientific and practical information that will bring immediate benefits to your practice. The application of ergonomics will be a focus of this program. Case studies will be examined and an open forum will be offered to problem solve clinical issues experienced by the participants.

Health Promotion Specialist Required

The Centre for Community Oral Health (CCOH), Faculty of Dentistry, is a not-for-profit organization that administers dental programs catering to undeserved populations on behalf of the University of Manitoba. We are looking for a health promotion professional to promote oral health in our Manitoba programs.

Permanent Full-time Position
The incumbent in this full-time position will join our existing Health Promotion Team and contribute to conceptualizing, planning and implementation of Health Promotion initiatives targeting Manitoba’s disadvantaged populations.

Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or diploma/certificate in a relevant oral health or health related discipline (Dental Hygienist, Dietician, Nursing, etc) required.

Must have directly-related experience in health promotion and have demonstrated successful leadership and program coordination. A sound understanding of the principles of community development and population health is essential.

On Wednesday June 11, the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Dentistry will host Urban Smiles, a free day of dental care and health promotion in honor of the Faculty's 50th Anniversary Celebration. Dental hygiene care will be provided to expecting mothers and individuals with diabetes.

Dental hygienists are needed for morning, afternoon or all-day shifts.
