April 6th to 12th, 2019 is National Dental Hygienists Week – let’s celebrate together! Part of the NDHW is the ‘Put your Purple on’, where National landmarks are lit up purple in celebration. The MDHA is pleased to announce that the WINNIPEG sign at The Forks will be lit up purple on Thursday, April 11th, 2019. Visit the sign at any time during the day to see it in it’s purple glory. The MDHA is also organizing a group shot at 6:00 p.m. Please consider joining us at that time to be included in the shot! Wear your purple and come be a part of the celebration!

A great way to share oral health and dental hygiene messages with a wider audience during National Dental Hygienists Week is by supporting the MDHA’s and CDHA’s social media campaign.  In 2018, the NDHA social media activity reached a national audience of 5.5 million people, let’s exceed that this year!  By posting messages on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram, you can help educate Manitobans about the importance of maintaining good oral health practices, remind them that taking care of their mouth, teeth, and gums positively impacts other aspects of their lives, and help them understand the role and importance of the dental hygiene profession.
KEY ORAL HEALTH MESSAGES TO SHARE

  • Oral health affects your overall health and wellness
  • Periodontal disease has been linked to serious illness, including lung disease, diabetes, and heart disease
  • Key steps to good oral health: brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth daily, rine using an antibacterial mouthwash, eliminate tobacco use, eat healthy food, and visit your dental hygienist regularly
  • Dental hygienists are registered health care professionals who work in a variety of settings, with people of all ages, to prevent oral disease
  • Dental hygiene is the sixth largest registered health profession in Canada with 29,246 professionals
