The Search Is On

The Manitoba Dental Hygienists Association is in search of Registered Dental Hygienists who would like to become a mentor within the MDHA Mentorship Program.
This program plays a vital role in a Dental Hygiene student’s transition from student to private practice. As a mentor, you will have a lasting impact on your mentee’s educational experience and future in Dental Hygiene.
Your role as a Dental Hygiene mentor would include:
  1. A two year commitment (ie. you would remain with your mentee for the duration of their 2 years in the School of Dental Hygiene)
  2. Attend an MDHA sponsored evening per term, total of 4 events throughout the 2 years.
  3. In first year, your mentee would observe you in practice twice.
  4. In second year, your mentee would observe you in practice once.
  5. Attend the MDHA graduation breakfast at graduation in late May.
  6. Be an available resource for your mentee if they have questions, concerns, or require support throughout their 2 year education.
We would love to have you as part of our Mentorship Program. We invite Dental Hygienists from all walks of the profession – newer grads, established DH’s, specialty practice DH’s, etc. All we ask is that mentors have at least one year of experience in the profession. Keep in mind, volunteering for the Mentorship Program is a great way to tackle some of your Continuing Education Credits, and have fun doing it!
The commitment is small, but the rewards are BIG!

Interested? Have questions? Contact us ASAP as the School of Dental Hygiene’s newest incoming class starts within the next month.

We are excited to hear from you!MDHA Mentorship Committee,Contact us by phone or email at: (204)981-7327 or

Great Mission Opportunity

Canadians Helping Kids in Vietnam (CHKV) is a Winnipeg-based charity working since 1995 to improve the lives of children in Vietnam. We basically build schools, get Canadians to sponsor destitute families monthly, run our Biking on a Child’s Future campaigns to purchase bicycles to enable students to get to and from school, and we send dental and medical teams on two week missions.
We are hoping to send a dental team to Vietnam from March 1 – 15, 2015 and another team the following year. We have had dental missions in 2010 and 2012 where hundreds of low income families saw their children receive free primary care including examinations, cleanings, fillings, and extractions. The first and last weekends are used for travel to and from Vietnam but the middle weekend is usually a 4 day break at a resort.
For our next mission we are hoping to send a team of 2-3 dentists, 2-3 hygienists and possibly assistants and general volunteers for record-keeping and activities for the children while they are waiting.  The two week clinics have generally occurred in hospitals but we are looking at other sites in various communities throughout Vietnam.
An estimate of the airfare, ground transportation, hotels and some after service activities is calculated and participants contribute that as a donation to CHKV. In return, all travel arrangements are made by CHKV and a tax receipt is provided for participants following the mission. It is also of interest to some to be able to request pre or post mission personal travel arrangements and that we are prepared to do as well.
If you are interested in receiving more information for this amazing experience, please call Tam Nguyen at 204-775 – 1160 who will lead the 2015 dental mission.
