As oral health professionals are constantly being challenged to meet the demands of today’s non-surgical periodontal therapy, it is critical that they possess the knowledge and skills that allow for the most effective utilization of ultrasonic technology. With the use of a camera, the course facilitator with provide a “live” visual experience that will offer the opportunity for participants to calibrate their ultrasonic scaling technique against current scientific information. Participants will have the opportunity to use a variety of ultrasonic inserts and typodonts as they are guided through the process of insert selection, strategic insert sequencing and insert adaptation in the most anatomically challenging situations. As pain management is an essential component of periodontal therapy procedures, anesthetic options will be discussed briefly and will include information on a new, non-injectable anesthetic for scaling and/or root planing.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: At the completion of this course the participant will be able to

1. Discuss the benefits of ultrasonic technology as they apply to the removal of calculus and BIOFILM

2. Select the appropriate inserts and strategically sequence ultrasonic instrumentation in the most safe and effective manor

3. Demonstrate ultrasonic insert adaptation in the most anatomically challenging situations

4. Achieve an improved level of patient comfort while using ultrasonic technology

5. Demonstrate the application of non-injectable anesthetic as is applies to scaling and/or root planing.
